Winter Care Tips for Your Pets

Three kittens in the snow

As the temperature drops and snow graces the UK (briefly!), it’s important to ensure our furry friends stay safe, warm, and comfortable during the colder months. Winter Pet Care is essential and here at Wings and Paws Rescue, we’ve compiled some helpful tips to keep your pets happy and healthy.

🧣 Wrap Up Warm

Not all pets are built to handle cold weather. Short-haired dogs, senior pets, or smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs can struggle when temperatures dip. For your dog, consider a snug, weather-resistant jacket during walks. For smaller animals kept outdoors, ensure their enclosures are properly insulated with extra bedding and protection from wind and damp.

🐾 Protect Their Paws

Cold weather can be harsh on delicate paws. Snow, ice, and grit used on roads and paths can cause irritation or even injury. After each walk, take a moment to check your pet’s paws for redness, cuts, or stuck debris. Rinse them gently to remove any harmful grit, and apply pet-safe paw balm to soothe and protect their skin.

🌡️ Limit Outdoor Time

While some pets love a romp in the snow, prolonged exposure to cold can be dangerous. Limit outdoor time, especially for young, elderly, or short-haired pets. If you have outdoor animals like rabbits or guinea pigs, move their hutches to a sheltered spot, such as a garage or shed, and provide plenty of hay for warmth.

💧 Hydration Still Matters

Even in cold weather, pets need to stay hydrated. Outdoor water bowls can freeze, so check them regularly and replace frozen water with fresh supplies. Indoor pets also benefit from consistent access to clean, fresh water.

🎾 Winter Pet CARE Playtime and Walks

Snow and mud can make outdoor adventures messy but fun! Keep a towel handy to dry off your pet after a walk to prevent them from getting chilled. For those who prefer indoor playtime, engage your pets with interactive toys, puzzles, or gentle training sessions.

💓 Check for Hidden Visitors

In cold weather, cats and small wildlife sometimes seek warmth by hiding under car bonnets or in wheel arches. Before starting your car, give the hood a quick tap or honk the horn to make sure no animals are sheltering there.
