The Importance of Updating Your Pet’s Microchip After Adoption

When you adopt a pet, you give them a new lease on life and a loving home—but your responsibility doesn’t end there. One of the most crucial steps to ensure your pet’s safety is updating their microchip information. Sadly, we’ve recently had a few cases at Wings and Paws Rescue where adopted pets have gone missing, and their microchips still had outdated contact details. This makes reuniting them with their new families much harder.

Of course we'll always help whenever we can - but it's so much easier if the details are up to date!

Let’s talk about why microchip updates are essential, how to check your pet’s chip number, and how easy it is to keep your information current.

Why Updating a Microchip Matters

A microchip is your pet’s permanent ID. If they ever get lost, the chip helps rescuers, vets, and shelters contact you. But it’s only effective if the information linked to it is correct.

When pets are adopted, their microchip often has the rescue’s or previous owner’s details. If these aren’t updated with your name, address, and phone number, anyone scanning the chip won’t know how to reach you. This delay can cause unnecessary stress and potentially prolong your pet’s time away from home.

How to Find Your Pet’s Microchip Number

Every pet adopted through Wings and Paws Rescue comes microchipped, and the chip number should be included in your adoption paperwork. Here’s how to locate it:

  1. Check your adoption paperwork – This often includes microchip information.

  2. Look at your pet’s vaccination card – The number is sometimes recorded there.

  3. Visit your vet – If you can’t find the number, your vet can scan your pet to retrieve it (and this is usually free).

How to Update Your Pet’s Microchip Details

Once you have the microchip number, updating the information is quick and easy. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Visit the website of the microchip provider (just search online for the provider).

  2. Log in or create an account using the chip number.

  3. Update your contact details, including your name, address, and phone number.

  4. Pay a small fee (usually between £10-£20).

And that’s it! Your pet’s chip will now be linked to your information, ensuring you’ll be contacted if they’re ever found.
